Grass

I know about different types of grass
From sitting in a farmer’s field
The rough blades piercing my skin,
From lying on lawns moist with morning dew
So, what kind of grass are you?

Will you chafe and leave behind an itchy rash
Or lay silky soft against my skin?
Will you wilt with the first heat of summer,
Or will you reach deep enough to draw water
From the ground that would sustain you?

Are you new grass, your shallow roots
Guaranteeing that you will wash away with
The first major spring storm, or are you
Fine fescue, hardy and tolerant and easy
To get along with for the long run?

I’ll ask again—are you a rough blade?
Are you one who will hang around
For one short growing season then bolt,
Or are you true bluegrass, faithful forever,
Full of hope and optimism and friendship?

I feel your touch, but on this perfect day
With its soft breezes and sweet summery scent
I fear your tenderness is a disguise. I do.
I know about different types of grass
So, what kind of grass are you?
